1 year check-up

Today was Nicholas' 1 year check-up and it was slightly on the traumatic side! The doctor warned me at our last appointment that he would have to have blood drawn this time and I've dreaded it since. And for good reason! Of course they had to do it first thing since the lab tech was leaving for the day so the rest of the visit was a disaster! They don't do it any special way for babies. Nope, they stick a needle right in their arm and go to town. He cried, and cried, and cried some more. Then after stopping, he'd look down and see the big arm band they put on to cover it and he'd start crying again. If you don't know Nicholas that well, crying for him is really more of a blood curdling scream that could break glass. We finally just took the arm band off hoping he'd forget the event, but when he spotted it in the trash can he started up again!! Then he got weighed & measured - 22 pounds 10 ounces (50%) & 30 1/4 inches long (60%). I was expecting a lot more because we've all agreed he looks like a toddler in a 5 year old's body. Doctor said he looks fantastic (Of course. No surprises there.) and based on some of the information I gave her she said it appears he's entering the tantrum phase of a 15 month old a little early. Great news there. She said on the down side we'll have a battle of wills for awhile but the good news is we'll have a very well behaved 2 year old when he gets there. Hmmm, I'm not sure how I feel about this. Then we got to top off the day with a round of 3 shots in the legs. So, he had an all around painfully memorable visit and will probably beat the crap out of me the next time we try to take him there.

  1. 50%? I would have thought he was at least 25 lbs! I am not looking forward to the 1 year check up now.

  2. My poor, poor baby! I can't believe they did that to him - couldn't they give him laughing gas first?!?!?

Tantrum phase, eh? Well Aunt Julie can take him off your hands till that's over - no problem there!!!
